The summer has arrived and so has the willingness to do more, be productive, and do new things. Although the summer vacation for most students in our country has come to an end, the summer activities on the school grounds have not stopped. Every year the ERP for school organizes fun activities for students which make them feel not only relaxed and excited but also help them to learn something that assists learning values. One such skill is the English language.
English helps students in many ways, it is a common language used by the British, and we learned it only to communicate with them. Later, the same people who were suppressed by the British colonizers came together by using English as a common means of communication that united entire India and help them connect despite their cultural and regional language barriers. Hence, this language has an interesting history, at least in our country.
Presently, students must learn this language, not to revolt against colonizers, but to have a wider scope of opportunities. Especially those who would like to study abroad, and plan on shifting. Because the mediums of institutions in India are pretty diverse, it is not uncommon to come across students who are weak in English. It does not make them any less than a student of the English medium because their knowledge might be spot on, but their language might not. To help them overcome this language barrier, they can follow these fun activities this summer.
Parents and students can pick up these fun activities willingly if an institution’s ERP (ERP full form is Enterprise resource management) does not encourage them for learning some advanced skills. Here is a list of these activities;
Read a book
Although this is the most common activity suggested by everyone when students are trying to learn English, people are unaware of the options this opens. A book does not have to be a novel, a book from the library, or a syllabus book. Students can try to read magazines on beauty, technology, cars, and any other topic they like. Most importantly, they can read fanfiction.
Fan fictions are the most read content by teenagers. They might not be interested in classics because it is hard to understand and have more literary value, but they have some idols and characters from series they like. Reading fan fiction or making up stories about such characters on the Internet by other people creates in them the spirit of writing similar stories themselves. They not only read English but also practice writing it out of their own will and sheer interest.
Be active on social media
Social media is believed to be a very toxic site, but when students find a reliable platform with proper regulations, they can use it to benefit their English writing skills. Other people on the platform might speak in a certain manner the proper observation of this helps students pick up on these conversational or statement patterns. Because most of them are learning English to communicate better in a school environment or office environment social media ticks all the categories and is available for learning and practicing all kinds of phrases.
Play video games
Video games these days have a very diverse platform. Back in the day, video games were meant for a single person only, and could be played on multiplayer modes only if there were two consoles available. This too was possible only if students had friends over or other siblings and family members to play with them. Recently, video games are computerized and even available on smartphones. They can even join world servers where people from across the globe can connect to talk, compete and join groups to play.
Every country has or unique official language. One would be surprised to know that everyone knows at least a few words of English to get by in case they are not fluent. Students can use this platform to get better in their English speaking skills because playing with others would mean communicating with them and this communication encourages learning certain phrases which boost their speaking skills.
Who knew that learning English could be so fun? Try out these methods and find the one well suited for you, to promote fun activities and learning at the same time.
